Since Hong Kong’s national security law was passed one year ago, there has been an erosion of the freedoms that Hong Kongers have come to expect as a former British colony. Hong Kong used to operate under a "one country, two systems" model that allowed things like freedom of speech, freedom of the press and freedom to practice any religion. Now that that’s changing, there’s a canary in the coal mine that some people are watching to see just how authoritaian Hong Kong’s government (or really Beijing’s government) has become. That canary is Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, a meditation practice that has been persecuted in the mainland since 1999.
