There was some criticism that that video showed a “well mannered dog past the high energy puppy phase”. Bluntly no, Belle is about 17 weeks old, she never saw a chicken until 2 weeks ago. Her play drive is insane, energy though the roof. She is not full on obedient with all things at all times. We have a LONG way to go where her.

Why is she well mannered here.

The formula…

Create the condition for failure
Control the situation so nothing bad happens during the failure
Correct the failure instantly and then praise heavily the proper behavior.

That is the three Cs of the process of training and it yields the fourth C, it…

Conditions the proper long term behaviour.

It may be that with some strong headed dogs especially older dogs that were not trained at all, that stronger methods are needed. Such as an eCollar, etc. But with a pup, I have seldom found that necessary. Breed doesn’t matter. I’ve trained mutts, Britney Spaniels, Rots, Pits, Huskies, etc.

The level of correction may have to change depending on the dog, but the formula is ALWAYS the same.
